Question by â BS â: Other ways to fight constipation during pregnancy? I am at my wits end. I'm almost 14 weeks, and my morning sickness is getting better, while my constipation is getting worse. I'm taking Metamucil 2-3 times a day, I'm eating tons of fruit, and trying very hard to eat fibrous foods. I am not overloading on calcium supplements or constipating foods. I'm drinking tons of water, too. My doctor took me off of prenatal vitamins and put me on Flintstone's because I'm having so much trouble (she thought maybe it was the iron in the vitamins). Nothing seems t 111; be working. My doctor said I can take Senokot twice a day if I need it, but I haven't had much luck with it in the past, and I've gotten conflicting information from other medical professionals about its safety (one doctor told me that oral laxatives can "give your baby diarrhea"). I dread having to use rectal suppositories, and they aren't designed for long-term use anyway. What else, if anything, can I do to alleviate this? The big problem is that I keep getting impactions. I've had two already, and one required an ER visit and two enemas. I'm sick of this, and I'm really concerned about having to strain, as I just found out my placenta is near my cervix and I'm supposed to be on pelvic rest until it moves (if and when it does). Any help is appreciated. Mandie - yeah, I know. And to think, during this last impaction episode I strained so hard I had broken blood vessels around my eyes. I had a sonogram yesterday, and thankfully everything is fine. Best answer:

what i do is to drink coffee.. i don't know if it has to be caffeinated or decaf. i also read it in a baby magazine to drink coffee at least one cup a day for constipation. :)

Wow it sounds like you are doing what you can naturally. High fiber cereals and veggies always do the trick for me.

how many flintstones are you taking? if you are taking 2 cut it down to one. increase your water intake and try colace (OTC stool softener) the 1st trimester (which you are past) is the MOST important time to be on vits. since you are 14 weeks, maybe take a few weeks off and see if that helps alot of the time its the folic acid (which is most imp. b4 you get preg and calcium they are worried about) a couple of weeks not taking vits wont hurt anything... pregnancy sho 117;ld be enjoyed and you shouldnt be miserable to that point.

teas seem to help also yogurt like activia and anythign with fiber and stay away from food that is hard to digest like red meat and things like that drinking hot to warm water mixed with lemon or orange juice seems to help i drink about 3 cups a day for some reason the hot water makes me digest my food faster...... drink plenty of water and get your walking to get things going inthe digestive system what truely helped me but wont do it more then once in pregnnacy is green tea its so good to help your body rid of everything as i felt full all the time and liek all hte food was in my intestines and nothign came out food wise i felt so much better after drinking it and let everything out but its not good to do that often during pregnnacy bc it can dehydrate you and get rid of nutrients our baby need

Try apples and prune juice. I hate prunes-but I was having the same problem earlier in the pregnancy and I drank 4 ounces really fast. And without being too descriptive-I felt like a new person by the end of the day! lol. Drink tons of water and orange juice helped me also. Good luck!

Maybe you can try a liquid diet for a few days. Take your vitamins and any other meds to help your constipation, but drink only water. juice, decafinated coffee or tea and milk or rice milk. Broths for lunch and dinner. This may help clean out your system and after a few days, introduce solid foods one at a time until you find the food that is causing your problem.

Girl, I so totally hear you! I'm due in April 2010 as well and the constipation is terrible. I'm also suffering from impactions and am just at my wits end. Today I gave up and took the senekot. I couldn't take it anymore. I'm now in pain and Colace, high fiber diet, tons of water, etc etc just doesn't work for me, period. I am starting to literally get sick from the constipation. I really don't know how it gives your baby diareah unless you are later in your pregnancy. I'm not a doctor but taking one laxative only softens things and gets things moving for me. I do not get diareah from one pill. I would honestly try the senekot. I actually cut one in half about 3 hours ago and plan on taking the other half tonight before I go to bed. I have also heard that ducolax (sp.) is ok to take as well? If that doesn't work have you tried milk of magnesia? The very thought of that makes me want to hurl but this will be my next step if things aren't resolved by tomorrow. Also, with placenta previa it is not a good thing to be straining for a bowel movement, esp if you are on pelvic rest. I had PP with my last pregnancy but don't remember being this constipated :( I really wish you the best of luck as I know how miserable you really are. Oh and CONGRATS on the baby!
